I started my photography journey in 2008 and took photographs of everything which I felt was beautiful. I shot macro, nature, landscape, etc. but it did not seem to satisfy me much. Keith Vaughan, FPSA, GMPSA : I am a retired chemistry professor in Halifax, Nova Scotia. I was born in the UK, and I grew up in Liverpool (home of the Beatles and scouse). I went to university in Manchester and Dundee, Scotland. I came to Canada in 1967, spent two years in Vancouver, B.C., before moving to Halifax in 1969 to take up a faculty position at Saint Mary's University. This is my 44th (and last) year of teaching chemistry full-time; I am also active in research in organic and medicinal chemistry. I got serious about photography when I joined the PGNS in 1973; then I got really serious in 1985 when I joined PSA and began to exhibit in internationals. I have 5* in Nature and Phototravel Divisions, Galaxy 7 in Pictorial and Master photojournalist 1 in PJ. I acheieved the distinction of GMPSA in 2012. My FPSA was awarded in 1999. Bob Devine : I have been interested in photography for many years, in particular wildlife photograpy, and I enter a number international exhibitions each year. I started with slides and you had to get the image/lighting perfect (no photoshop to help!) which I would then duplicate in camera, however there were always some small differences. I now use a Canon EOS1DX having recently upgraded from EOS 1D Mark III, and I am amazed at the quality of the images even at a very high iso.

Don Funderburg : I started taking photos when I was in the 8th grade. But I was a pretty poor boy and could not afford taking pictures, so my pictures were pretty much on again and off again. When I got married in 1968 I and my wife started taking more pictures. I took a few classes but still was pretty much a poor boy. When digital came along I got my first Fuji 3800. That was when photography really turned around for me. I took a correspondence course and passed but the course was so poor I really didn't get what I wanted out of it. I finally found NAPP and things in Photoshop really started to click. I worked for a major airline and traveled around the world in search of photos but usually I had a lot of family with me, so that distracted me a lot. I really hated slowing everyone down, so most of the photos were snapshots instead of great photos. Kids are gone, wife is really starting to become a great photographer in her own rights. We have joined a camera club and that has really gotten me going even further in photography. What really got us excited was entering photos in county and state fairs, especially when we won ribbons on every photo entered the first three years. Now I'm completed hooked. I'm still learning and watching everyone else and learn from that. Software is changing so fast it is very difficult to even stay close to the new stuff. Digital and I have improved to much in just the 10 years I have been in it. Amazing.

Mark Aksoy : Going back to the early 1980’s, my first photographic love was landscapes, especially in the American West with its heroic monuments of rock, weathered and shaped by elemental wind, fire and water. With the passing of years, I have branched into macro, photojournalistic, and creative photography as a veteran member of the Delaware County Camera Club, where I serve as Competitions Manager. As a PSA member since 1986, I have been a judge for the Print of the Month and for the 2001 PSA Camera Club Website Contest, and I now manage an online Electronic Imaging Division study group. Photography is a fabulous hobby and, dare I say, a lifestyle, which teaches you to see the world anew, in a fresh and meaningful way. Bob Protus : I started out in film photography back in the 80's. But I became disinterested in it after a few years. I worked as a photographer volunteer for OKC Zoo (Oklahoma City, Oklahoma) and had a great time. Now that I'm retired, I got my interest back for photography. I bought a Canon T3i with a kit lens 18-55mm. I then bought a Sigma 17-70mm F2.8-4 DC Macro OS HSM lens and a Canon EF-S 55-250mm IS lens. My favorite is the Sigma. I use that as my all around walking lens. It's very sharp. Now that photography has gone digital several years ago I now enjoy taking photographs. I plan on taking more photos because it gets me out more into the world and see things that many people miss. Photography is an art in itself.

Kraig Haplea : Kraig Haplea was born and raised in the Ohio area. His background is in television news, however he has also been involved in documentary, biography, training, fund raising and commercial productions. His career spans over two decades in producing quality visual elements. After graduating Miami University with a B.S. in Mass Communications, Kraig moved from Oxford to Idaho Falls, to work at KIFI, then back to Dayton to work for WKEF. His first substantial career break came in Charleston, South Carolina at the CBS affiliate...WCSC. He was named Chief Photographer after only 1 year on the job. Six years later he was lured back to Ohio with a job offer at WKRC in Cincinnati. Moving ahead another 5 years, he co-founded the successful production company I & Eye Productions. Kraig's career has also garnered him several prestigious awards. One of these includes a Peabody Award for his editing of a Hurricane Hugo special in Charleston, South Carolina. He also brought home a George Polk Award for that same project. Both awards were given on a national stage. With over a dozen AP and UPI awards, a Communicator Award and a Gabriel Award, his work has been showcased worldwide. In 1999, he received the honor of being named Ohio's Best News Photographer by AP. These are only some of the most notable recognitions Mr. Haplea has received, but there are many others. Jim Godell : I have been in the photography business since 1987 when I started photographing weddings for another photographer. In 1988 I attended my first formal photography class at the Mid America Institute of Professional Photographers (MAIPP) taught by Leonard Levy from the Boston area. Learning photography from a professional excited me and I went back to MAIPP for the next seven years. My experience spans over a number of different types of photography from pre-school to executives, including sports (all kinds), landscapes, and events. I won't mention the type of digital camera(s) I use or the computer since the vision comes from the head, heart and hands. I do post production work on almost all images, using NIK, PhotoShop CS5 and Elements10 along with Lightroom3. I retired from teaching at Northern Michigan University 15 years ago after teaching for 31 years as a business professor. Prior to the university term, I was high school business teacher for 5 years. Presently I am teaching a digital photography class for the Northern Center for Lifelong Learning in Marquette, Michigan.

Cynthia Crawford : My photography has evolved from early captures for reference material, to my present interest in something I call "photo-painting." I am a watercolorist, so it came naturally to start working with my pictures in a similar manner, though not all of them are painted or composites. In the last 2-3 years I've been selling and showing my photos and photo-paintings locally and online. My interest is mainly in wildlife and the beautiful natural world where I live, in Vermont. I've also published and sold cards, calendars and a few books. Further works might incorporate all my artistic interests, as I am also a musician and ardent bird-watcher. I envision a show with bird song, harp/recorder/pennywhistle music and art/photography, perhaps eventually made into a video.

Yevgeny Fesenko : I live in Donetsk, Ukraine. I have been interested in photography since 1989. I have been a winner of some international salons under FIAP, PSA, ISF patronage. I have some international awards - FIAP gold medal, FIAP honourable mention and ISF diploma III level. The main directions of my creations are landscape and cityscapeI work with infrared images with non-converted DSLR. I also write small verses of four lines to my pictures (closely associated by sense with image) in Russian and place them in the field of image, as usual. I graduated from Northeast Missouri State University with a Bachelor of Science degree in Photography and have worked as a photo lab technician in several states. I am currently the Assistant Store Manager at a drugstore where I started as the photo lab supervisor. If I didn't have kids to raise and bills to pay, I would be traveling the world with my camera. Hundreds of old antique cards from all over the world. 5 antique viewers. 5 Raumbild sets. Revised "Der Kampf Im Westen" (The Battle in the West) with 100 enhanced stereo views of Nazi soldiers, into large card format with info on front side and translated into English. Digitized my 3D slide collection and printed and mounted them in the large format for family and friends. Have a stereo projector and screen and glasses gathering dust now. Have shot good 3D photos with my 30D Canon hand held of mushrooms. Thanks to the generosity of Masuji Suto of Japan for providing the free software "Stereo Photo Maker" in the May 2011 issue of the PSA Journal. A terrific program. John Roach : I was a Director of Facilities at a large local hospital for many years proceeded by a career in real estate property management after being a US Navy 10 year veteran. Prior to retiring at 66 years of age 10 months ago, I decided I would travel, do photography, and write during retirement. To that end, my goal is to start a website and blog soon to share what I accomplish. During the past few months, I have taken online photography and writing courses in preparation for achieving that goal. I photograph as much as I can in support of the courses and for the shear joy of it. My primary interests are wildlife, landscape, architecture, cityscape, and travel photography. However, I am attempting to learn it all. I recently upgraded from my Microsoft HP XP Laptop (still use) to Apple iMac and use Photoshop Elements 9, CS5, Lightroom 3 for post processing of my photography. I have even purchased inexpensive studio lights to learn portrait photography. I use a Nikon D90 as my primary camera along with an array of lens, filters, extenders, etc. I live with my wife Joann Reynolds in Lake in the Hills, Illinois which is located about 45 miles northwest of Chicago. I am the member of the Crystal Lake Camera Club and Elgin Area Camera Club (local communities), Nikonians.org, and BetterPhoto.com. My wife still works for GE managing a joint venture with a Germany company. We support our local Symphony Orchestra and a few other not-for-profit organizations. We both love to travel extensively within the United States and abroad.

Earl Mueller : I have spent most of my life travelling the world on business. I have been in 87 countries. I have a Masters degree in Engineering. I owned three companies, one was a commercial photography business, which was used as a communications tool with people around the world. I have photos from each of the countries, when I had spare time from business. I taught Photography in Indiana, Arizona and St. Louis. Christine Penn : Christine Penn - Like many others, I've always had an interest in photography, along with a love of travel – they make great companions. In my twenties I did a trip to Europe with a group of young people and an old Instamatic, recording everything that crossed my path. Then in my forties I went on an African Safari with a Canon, my 1st 'decent' camera, and assumed that I would achieve better results. Not so !I joined my local camera club in Tauranga, New Zealand in 1996 - and my obsession started. It began in the darkroom, but eventually moved on to the computer. I like most subjects, but really enjoy working to a theme or on a project. I am happiest out there in the field, shooting images as they appear in the right light. I have been lucky enough to win medals at national and international competition level. I have gained my APSNZ and AFIAP distinctions.....the next challenge is my 1st Star.

Sue Milligan : Looking back, I wish I had taken that photo class while I was at the Maryland Institute of Art in the mid 60's. Instead of years of traveling, taking what amounted to "record shots", I might be able to look back at my photos with pride. But priorities change, I have more time, and I'm seeing things differently now...making photos instead of just taking them. I've slowed down too and gotten a bit shakier, so now I am forced to use my tripod whether I like it or not. I am a Canon Rebel user (I'm on my third) and it's just perfect for me. My husband and I have enjoyed this hobby together for years...starting out in the St Louis Camera Club, and for the last 15 years taking an active roll in the Cookeville Camera Club in Tennessee, and recently PSA. I am a firm believer in Camera Clubs. They are a wonderful way to learn about photography and to share your love of the craft with like minded people. Let me just thank PSA for giving its members the opportunity of sharing their work with this New Member Gallery. I have certainly enjoyed looking at the work of other PSA members and hope you enjoy mine.

Emilio Blanco : I started with a Brownie & later got an SRT-101, which still works. Living in Europe, prints/slides were not cheap for me and therefore I had to be picky with my shots. Being an on-and-off photographer for over five decades, I got into digital in 2000. Six years ago, though, I undertook the hobby with much more fervor. It's tremendous fun taking photography lessons, attending workshops, and just clicking away at practically anything by myself or with a group. Lad Bright : I’m a retired English instructor (B.A. English at N.C State University, MA in Comparative Literature from UNC-Chapel Hill). I enjoy photographing around my native North Carolina and have traveled often to Europe for study, travel, photography, and visits to relatives and friends. In my days of film photography from my home darkroom and that of Cape Fear Community College, where I taught, I owe thanks to Wayne Upchurch, who gave insights in his courses there. In 1984 I had a show of Infrared photography in Wilmington, which coincided with publication of a booklet of poems and photographs I wrote called Pathways and Gradations. My old Pentax 6x7 is gone now, replaced by digital cameras. In 2007 I enjoyed a 9-day workshop on Crete with photographer Steve Outram. Kyle Echols : Photography has been a passion of mine since I received my first 35mm camera at age twelve. Unfortunately, I had not pursued a visual arts education, instead choosing a more direct path to financial stability in Computer Science and Information Systems. Then, after seventeen years in Information Technology, I went back to school to obtain a second education, changing my long term career direction to Photography and Filmmaking. I have been pursuing this education, building a photography business in the evenings and weekends while supporting my family, and developing other artistic interests such as painting, illustration, and web design. My wife, Rachel, is also an avid photographer, focusing on nature, especially birds. She has won several awards in state-wide competitions and has had several of her photographs published in national magazines. Dave Edwards : Photography has been a lifetime learning experience for Dave. His interest in photography began at the age of 9 with a family vacation to Niagara Falls. The big landscape is his subject of choice although his business (Dave Edwards Photography LLC) focuses primary on weddings and senior portraits. Dave is a career Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources (WDNR) employee retiring in 2008. Dave was an evidence photography instructor with WDNR for 15 years and developed standard operating procedures on the use of digital images as legal evidence. Dave spent a career investigating and photo-documenting pollution cases. Hundreds of Dave’s photographs were used as evidence in the prosecution of these cases. Bob Reinhardt : The photographs displayed here represent the past six years of exploring “sacred grounds” in the cemeteries of Scotland, notably the area in and around Edinburgh. These sites are extremely rich in visual treasure. Each site possesses a unique slice of the history, religion, art and architecture of the time period in which it was created. Today, several of the sites are in a shameful state of disrepair with nature rapidly reclaiming the landscape. Trees and shrubs, once carefully manicured, now tower over and envelop the beautifully carved tombstones. Celtic crosses and majestic marble angels are hostage to vines and weeds that strangle and conceal them from the view of the passerby. The gravestones seem almost indifferent to the elements that continue to wear at their surfaces and challenge their structural integrity. It is the collision and contrast of that ongoing confrontation that draws me into these sites year after year. I have dedicated myself to preserving those memories and voices from the past to be handed on for others to share into the future.

Ian Silvester : Ian Silvester is a keen amateur photographer, particularly of steam trains and African wildlife. He took up photography as a serious hobby in 1973 when he bought his first Nikon SLR camera. Since then, he has used Nikon equipment almost exclusively, buying a digital camera in 2005. His colour photography is now solely digital, while for black and white images he uses a second-hand Rolleiflex camera. Capturing the last workings of live steam trains has taken Ian all around the world, to countries and regions little visited by mainstream tourists. Now that steam has virtually ended as regular main line motive power, enthusiasts recreate the experience by organising steam-hauled private charter trains. Regular steam still exists in China where he has spent 8 weeks in the last year.

Sarah Donner : I have been fooling around with photography for approximately 20 years. I have been president of my small community Camera Club for three years. This is my first year as a member of the Boynton Beach Camera Club, and of course, my first year as a member of PSA. I try not to miss a meeting of the BBCC and have learned A LOT since joining. I am a member of a PSA Study Group and find that I am spending MUCH time working with my photos. I am not new to Photoshop Elements, but am to CS4. It feels like I am taking graduate level courses, trying to learn everything, including InDesign which I use to produce a couple of community newsletters. I love it all.

Louis Agius : Though I had a camera since a very young age, I only took photography seriously in 1996. My photography took off when I joined Malta Photographic Society and learned a lot from the local experienced photographers. Up to 2005 I spent most of my spare time in my own darkroom but now I have gone all digital. My favorite subjects are shooting action and people photography, but I also keep an open mind to other aspects of photography. I have been a committee member of the Malta Photographic Society since the year 2000 and apart from other positions on the committee I was Vice President for four years. I had a studio that in the beginning was a darkroom lab, wedding and portrait studio. I gradually moved from the wedding and portrait business to commercial and industrial work as well as the freelance work for the local newspapers. I am now working on rebuilding the studio and doing article writing with photos as well. I have moved almost totally from the film cameras to digital. I try my hand at all aspects of photography, and have done freelance work, which covers weddings, portraiture and commercial work. John Andrew Hughes : John Andrew Hughes was born within stone throwing distance to the gates of Edinburgh Castle in Scotland and spent most of his childhood living in London. John?s parents Leonard and Helen, handed him a Kodak Retina S2 camera at the age of 7 years. In 1975 he became an apprentice to the renowned Fleet Street Press Photographer Charles R. Cramp FRPS FMPA ABIPP. John was first published at the tender age of 16 years in the ?Bromley & Kentish Times? with a photograph of a burst water main. His work has appeared in every major London newspaper and many prominent magazines. Susan Cowles : I became Interested in photography when I joined my husband at the 2006 PSA Conference in Baltimore. I was able to pose and photograph my first portrait. I decided right then - photography is for me. I joined PSA in Jan 31, 2007. I serve as Secretary of the Southern California Council of Camera Clubs (S4C). I will Chair the Photojournalism Division for 2008-09. Since 2007 I have been the Director of the PSA CPID International Creative Club Competition (ICCC). Bill Kramer : Bill Kramer has been a serious amateur photographer for over forty years and a member of PSA since 1996. Robert B. Gorrill, APSA, MNEC : Bob is the PSA webmaster, Vice Chairman of the Photo Travel Division and Region Director for PSA Region 15. He received his APSA at the 1995 PSA conference. His work has been published in magazines and newspapers and he has had many one man shows of his work in the New England area where he is frequently called upon to be a judge and guest lecturer. He was elected a Master Member in 2005 of the New England Camera Club Council and in 2006 was elected a Vice President of the organization. Bob Benson : Bob Benson lives in Schaumburg, Illinois, where he active in the Chicago council (CACCA) as a current board member and former president. He co-founded the first all digital camera club in the area ten years ago. He is also the chair of EID's Interclub Competition. He started with version 3.5 on Photoshop, and is still learning all its intricacies. He finally gave up the ghost on film about two years ago.
